Lawyers for former Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD) Accountant, Gerald Appiah, have rejected suggestions that their client is being investigated together with former Executive Secretary Dennis Miracles Aboagye over an alleged GH¢50 million fraud.
According to the legal team, Gerald Appiah was approached by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) solely in relation to issues arising from the Auditor-General’s Report, which they say identified financial infractions amounting to about GH¢500,000.
“My client is not involved in any investigation that has to do with Dennis Miracles Aboagye. EOCO approached him solely on the Auditor General’s Report on infractions of GH¢500,000. The GH¢50 million statement by EOCO is strange to us,” the lawyer stated.
The comments come amid ongoing public debate following EOCO’s announcement that it is investigating former IMCCoD officials over the alleged misappropriation of approximately GH¢55 million. EOCO has said Gerald Appiah, Dennis Miracles Aboagye and others are under investigation for alleged offences including conspiracy to steal, stealing, causing financial loss to the state and money laundering. The agency also disclosed that Appiah had begun voluntarily refunding funds linked to its investigations while stressing that the refunds do not end the probe or absolve any suspect of criminal liability.
The lawyer, however, insists his client’s matter is distinct from the allegations involving the former Executive Secretary and questioned EOCO’s reference to a GH¢50 million case, describing the agency’s public position as inconsistent with the basis on which his client was invited for questioning.
The latest development adds another dimension to the high-profile investigation, with legal representatives now challenging the scope of EOCO’s claims as investigations continue.
