Lionel Messi has admitted that Argentina’s World Cup final defeat by Spain has left the team facing a painful period of recovery after their bid to retain the trophy ended in disappointment.
Argentina suffered a 1-0 defeat after Ferran Torres scored in extra time to hand Spain their second World Cup title and end the South American side’s defence of the crown won in 2022.
For Messi, the loss was particularly painful. The 39-year-old has now suffered defeat in two World Cup finals, having also lost to Germany in 2014.
With Messi yet to confirm whether he will continue with Argentina, the defeat could mark the end of his World Cup career. He is unlikely to feature at the 2030 tournament.
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal,” Messi said in a message shared on social media.
Despite the disappointment, the Argentina captain reflected on the team’s achievements during the tournament, highlighting their run to a third final in the last four World Cups.
He also thanked supporters for standing behind the team and praised the unity the national side had helped create across the country.
Messi finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, playing a decisive role as Argentina recovered from difficult moments to defeat Egypt and England in the knockout stages.
However, Spain proved too strong in the final, conceding just one goal throughout the entire tournament before Torres’ extra-time strike secured the title.
Messi also congratulated Spain on their victory, while Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez praised his teammates for their commitment to the national team.
“We defended these colours with pride, humility and commitment,” Fernandez wrote.
He added that the team had shown that representing Argentina was about more than simply winning, insisting that the players had continued to give everything for the shirt.
The final was followed by controversy, with FIFA’s disciplinary committee appointing a prosecutor to investigate altercations between players and officials from both teams after the final whistle.
For Argentina, however, the focus now turns to the future. After reaching two consecutive World Cup finals, the team must begin preparing for life beyond a generation led by Messi — if the legendary captain decides that his international career has come to an end.
