Kristo Asafo members urge Chief Justice, Mahama to ensure fairness in funeral dispute case

Report filed by Henry Ayi Addo

A group of Kristo Asafo Church members from across Ghana’s 16 regions has appealed to the Chief Justice and President John Dramani Mahama to ensure fairness and impartiality in the ongoing legal dispute surrounding the funeral of the church’s founder, Emeritus Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.

The appeal follows a High Court injunction reportedly issued in connection with the funeral arrangements, which has deepened tensions within the church over the leadership and burial of the late founder.

The supporters, who described themselves as representing a majority of Kristo Asafo Church members nationwide, argued that the court should also consider allegations relating to the enforcement of earlier court orders in the dispute.

They claimed that attention should be directed at alleged breaches of a previous injunction and the circumstances surrounding an earlier shooting incident involving former Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and no court findings were presented to support the claims.

Despite reports of legal proceedings involving some of the funeral organisers, the funeral of Emeritus Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka was held at Gomoa Mpota in the Central Region, with large numbers of church members and supporters attending.

The event drew representatives from Kristo Asafo branches across the country and from international branches, including the church’s London branch.

Witnesses described the funeral as heavily attended, with mourners dressed predominantly in red and black, reflecting what many characterised as a period of profound grief for the church.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held, during which church members, family members, friends, sympathisers and representatives of various church departments paid their final respects to the late founder.

According to supporters, Sarah Adwoa Safo participated in the funeral activities despite reports that legal action had been initiated against her in relation to the funeral arrangements.

They claimed that although a court injunction was reportedly granted on July 29, 2026, it was not personally served on her before she arrived at the funeral grounds. That claim has not been independently confirmed.

Donations were reportedly received from various individuals and institutions through designated banking channels during the funeral programme.

The funeral dispute has become one of the most significant internal conflicts in the history of the Kristo Asafo Church, with court proceedings and competing claims over leadership and funeral arrangements continuing to generate public attention.

Supporters have called for the matter to be resolved peacefully through the legal process while preserving the unity and integrity of the church founded by the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
