More than 700 residents of Hohoe in the Volta Region have been forced to seek shelter in classrooms after flooding destroyed or damaged their homes.
The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor, said mud houses were among those worst affected by the floods, with several residents also losing personal belongings.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, September 29, Mr Tsekpor said the number of displaced residents staying in classrooms had exceeded 700 as of Monday.
“With the figures we have currently, we have over seven hundred as of yesterday [Monday] living in classrooms,” he said.
The MP appealed for urgent assistance for the affected residents, describing their situation as dire.
“We want support immediately because our people are in a dire situation,” he said.
Overall, more than 3,000 residents have reportedly been displaced by the flooding, while over 400 houses have been affected after the River Dayi overflowed its banks.
