James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has declared his recent acquittal as a triumph of truth and justice over political persecution, following a high-profile trial that lasted over three years.
On Tuesday, April 9, 2025, the Accra High Court acquitted and discharged Quayson of all charges, including forgery and perjury, in a case that hinged on accusations he held Canadian citizenship at the time of filing to contest the 2020 elections.
Speaking to the media after the ruling, a visibly relieved Quayson maintained his innocence and said the verdict reaffirms his belief that the case was politically motivated.
“I came to serve, not to deceive. This was never about the law—it was about politics. But I stood firm because I knew the truth would prevail,” he said.
He insisted that all necessary legal procedures were followed during his candidacy, and thanked his constituents and legal team for their unwavering support throughout the ordeal.
The outcome ends a long legal battle that cast a shadow over his tenure in Parliament and stirred national debate about dual citizenship and political eligibility. With the case behind him, Quayson now looks to refocus on his mandate in Assin North.
