Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has commended Gabon for what he described as a “peaceful transition to democratic governance,” following the election of General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema as President.
In a congratulatory message issued shortly after Nguema’s landslide victory—with over 90% of the vote—Mahama lauded the people of Gabon for embracing stability after a period of political upheaval.
“This marks a significant step forward,” Mahama said. “I am confident that Gabon will continue to play a crucial role in promoting stability and prosperity in our region.”
General Nguema, who led a military coup in 2023 that ended nearly six decades of rule by the Bongo family, has now secured his position through the ballot, signaling a new chapter in the Central African nation’s political history.
Mahama’s message reflects growing regional support for Gabon’s return to constitutional order and underscores the importance of democratic consolidation in Africa.
