Ghana U-20 head coach Desmond Ofei has doubled down on his team’s ultimate mission — securing a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile — as the Black Satellites continue their strong run in the ongoing Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
Following a crucial 1-0 win over reigning champions Senegal in their second Group C game, Ofei made it clear in his post-match remarks that every step taken in the tournament is geared toward that World Cup dream.
“This tournament is important, but our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup,” Ofei stated. “That’s the focus. Each match and every positive result brings us closer. We’ll keep fighting, preparing thoroughly, and giving our best in the next game.”
Ghana, who began their AFCON campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo, secured their first win thanks to a 14th-minute strike from Emmanuel Mensah. The victory has placed the Black Satellites in a strong position heading into their final group match against the Central African Republic on Thursday, May 8 at 18:00 GMT.
A win in that fixture would all but guarantee Ghana a spot in the semifinals — the gateway to qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. Under current CAF rules, the top four teams in the U-20 AFCON automatically qualify for the World Cup, making Thursday’s match a do-or-die affair.
With a clear goal in mind and momentum on their side, Ofei and his players are staying grounded but determined, knowing that a place on the global stage is now within reach.
