Ludvig Åberg produced one of the standout rounds of the week to seize control of the The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, firing a spectacular nine-under-par 63 to take the halfway lead.
The Swedish star dazzled with an aggressive display that included two remarkable chip-in eagles during his second round, propelling him to **12 under par**, two shots clear of American contender Xander Schauffele.
Schauffele had earlier set the clubhouse target with a brilliant 65, striking every fairway in a precise round featuring eight birdies and just one bogey. His attacking approach paid dividends as he took advantage of softer greens before they began firming up later in the day.
While Åberg and Schauffele surged up the leaderboard, several of golf’s biggest names were simply relieved to survive the cut.
World number one Scottie Scheffler and world number two Rory McIlroy both arrived hoping to match the record of three Players Championship victories set by Jack Nicklaus. Instead, they finished Friday battling to stay in the tournament.
McIlroy, the defending champion, continued to manage a recent back injury and admitted he felt short of preparation time. A closing birdie gave the Northern Irishman a second-round 71, leaving him **one over par** for the tournament.
Scheffler endured an unusually erratic round as his typically reliable accuracy deserted him. The two-time Players champion repeatedly found the thick rough and even three-putted from 12 feet on the 16th. A birdie at the final hole salvaged a 73, leaving him tied with McIlroy at **one over** heading into the weekend.
Further down the leaderboard, England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick led the British challenge at **five under par**. Fleetwood mixed birdies and bogeys before an eagle on the 16th helped secure a 70, while Fitzpatrick carded a 69 but was left frustrated after missing a short putt on his final hole.
Veteran Justin Rose climbed to **four under** with a 68, while Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre remained level par after a steady 72.
Several players failed to make the weekend as the cut line fell at **two over par**, including Shane Lowry, Harry Hall, Aaron Rai, Marco Penge and Jordan Smith.
Elsewhere, Justin Thomas moved into contention at **eight under**, alongside Corey Conners, while Cameron Young sat at **nine under** after a 67.
But perhaps the most dramatic moment of the day belonged to Tom Hoge, who endured a nightmare on the seventh hole. After finding water off the tee, he struggled through a chaotic sequence of mishits and finished with a **quintuple-bogey nine**, tumbling from one under to four over.
With changing winds expected over the weekend, Åberg’s local knowledge—he lives nearby and considers Sawgrass his home course—could prove crucial. Yet with several elite players still within striking distance, the tournament remains wide open heading into the final two rounds.
