Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the ongoing construction of an ultramodern VIP Lounge at the Kotoka International Airport is expected to be completed and handed over by the end of 2026.
The Minister disclosed this after inspecting the project on Friday, September 4, 2026, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and the quality of construction.
Unlike conventional government-funded infrastructure projects, Mr Ablakwa said the VIP Lounge is being financed without direct expenditure from the public purse.
He explained that the project is being supported through a corporate social responsibility (CSR) arrangement involving Ghanaian businesses.
Under the arrangement, participating companies provide funding directly to local contractors of their choice who are working on the project.
The Foreign Ministry’s Estate Bureau, he said, provides oversight and supervision to ensure that construction meets the required standards and specifications.
Mr Ablakwa said the financing model has allowed the project to progress without relying on taxpayer funds or going through conventional public procurement processes.
He described the initiative as a demonstration of how government could leverage partnerships with local businesses to deliver strategic infrastructure while reducing pressure on public finances.
“This project is a great symbol of what can be achieved without public funds and public procurement,” Mr Ablakwa said.
He expressed confidence that the remaining works would be completed within the scheduled timeframe, paving the way for the facility to be handed over before the close of 2026.
