A deepening rift within the Amenfi East branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has erupted into the open, as Constituency Chairman Nana Kofi Atokyi accuses the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Raymond Nana Ebbah, of bypassing party protocols to make secret political appointments.
In a letter addressed to regional party leadership and widely circulated in the media, Mr. Atokyi condemned what he called a blatant disregard for party structures in the selection of individuals for key public roles, including a representative on the Regional Lands Commission Board and the Municipal Director of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
Atokyi claims neither he nor any of the core nine constituency executives were consulted prior to the appointments—actions he labeled as “unauthorised, unjust, and disrespectful.”
Tensions reportedly escalated after the MCE defended the Lands Commission appointment as “his personal slot,” a justification the Regional Minister is said to have rejected, insisting on broader consultation with party leadership, including the Member of Parliament.
The appointment of Mr. Alidu Dramani as YEA Municipal Director sparked even greater backlash, as it allegedly defied a directive from regional party executives to halt any such postings until internal consultations were complete. Despite this, Dramani reportedly assumed office under the instructions of the MCE—igniting youth anger and threats of protest.
Atokyi also alleged that supporters of the MCE have taken to social media to insult and intimidate executives, and accused the MCE of personally insulting the party’s Women’s Organizer—intensifying internal discord.
Calling for urgent intervention from the Regional Minister, party leadership, and the President, Atokyi warned that the situation risks undermining party cohesion in Amenfi East ahead of critical national elections.
“I know the threats I face may worsen because of this release, but I must speak out for the unity and future of the party,” he said.
The Amenfi East controversy underscores growing internal tensions in the NDC over political appointments and the importance of adherence to party protocol in governance decisions.
