Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has taken a strong stance against the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, accusing the government of manipulating economic data to discredit the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, March 13, Dr. Amin Adam criticized Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for what he described as a deliberate attempt to misrepresent the economic performance of the previous administration.
“The 2025 budget was a hatchet job, designed to fit a pre-planned narrative of economic mismanagement under the NPP,” he asserted.
His comments follow the presentation of the 2025 Budget to Parliament on March 11, where Dr. Ato Forson blamed the previous government for fiscal mismanagement, excessive borrowing, and a worsening debt crisis.
Dr. Amin Adam, however, refuted these claims, insisting that Ghana’s economic data shows strong revenue performance and improved expenditure controls, contradicting the bleak picture painted in the budget.
He also challenged the reported fiscal deficit figures, arguing that they were inflated to reinforce the perception of economic failure under the NPP.
“In fact, an economy with such strong revenue performance and expenditure controls, as shown by the data, cannot produce the kind of elevated fiscal outturns the Minister announced. We see a lot of contradictions,” he noted.
Dr. Amin Adam’s remarks set the stage for heightened political and economic debate over the true state of Ghana’s finances and the impact of past and present economic policies.
