Former National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has expressed disappointment over his suspension, saying he believes he should have been given an opportunity to explain his position before being asked to step aside.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah was suspended by President John Dramani Mahama on October 1 pending the completion of a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry into allegations surrounding a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The presidential directive described the suspension as an administrative measure and not a finding of wrongdoing.
The allegations involve claims that about US$623,000 was received from prospective travellers seeking assistance with visa applications and travel arrangements for the tournament. The NSA has denied authorising or operating any such visa facilitation or money-collection arrangement and has said it is cooperating with the investigation.
Speaking to JoySports after the suspension, Mr Ampofo Ankrah said he remained composed despite his disappointment.
“I’m still calm, a bit disappointed,” he said.
He said his main concern was that he had not been given an opportunity to properly present his side of the matter.
“I’m disappointed that I’ve not been heard. It is disappointing that we haven’t been able to have a discussion as to exactly what the situation is,” he added.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah said that, before the suspension, his attention had been on preparations at the Accra Sports Stadium and other NSA facilities for upcoming national and international sporting assignments.
“I’ve been focused on preparing the facility, Accra Sports Stadium, and other areas around the National Sports Authority to get ready for the Black Stars and other national assignments,” he said.
The former NSA boss had earlier appeared before investigators in connection with the allegations and denied wrongdoing. His lawyer, Jerry Avenorgbor, has also said the investigation is being conducted by the Economic Crime Unit at Police Headquarters.
Following the suspension, Professor Emmanuel Osei Sarpong was appointed Acting Director-General of the NSA to oversee the authority while the investigation continues.
