Unknown armed men reportedly wielding guns and machetes have destroyed parts of a GH¢1 million National Democratic Congress office complex under construction at Awiaso Junction in the Ellembelle District, escalating tensions over a long-running land dispute.
The attack, which occurred on May 7, targeted a property reportedly acquired in 2017 by Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah from the late chief, Nana Boadi. Following the chief’s death, the Awiaso royal family challenged the sale, leading to legal proceedings that were later moved to Alternative Dispute Resolution. Despite reported efforts by the NDC to meet conditions set by the family—including repurchasing the land, employing local youth and supporting the construction of a palace—the dispute remains unresolved.
Joseph Armah Agyekum condemned the demolition as unlawful, stressing that only the courts or the District Security Council have the authority to order such action. Meanwhile, Ellembelle NDC Constituency Chairman, Alex Mahama, has warned that those behind the destruction will face prosecution if arrested, revealing that the project site had been attacked before.
