Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has called on lawmakers across the world to intensify their efforts in promoting peace, justice and inclusive development, describing them as essential foundations for sustainable progress.
Addressing Ghana’s delegation at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Istanbul, Mr Bagbin stressed that public confidence in governance systems is built on structures that expand opportunities, protect livelihoods and support young people.
According to a statement issued by Mr David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament and copied to the Ghana News Agency, the Speaker noted that peace should not be understood merely as the absence of conflict, but as a condition rooted in fairness, equity and strong institutions.
He underscored the central role of parliaments in driving these objectives, citing Ghana’s legislative oversight in areas such as environmental policy and social protection as examples of how parliamentary work translates into real national impact.
While acknowledging Ghana’s democratic progress, Mr Bagbin pointed to ongoing socio-economic and governance challenges, including inequality, unemployment among young people, limited institutional capacity, environmental degradation and emerging threats linked to misinformation, cybersecurity risks and unequal access to digital technologies.
The statement further emphasised that Parliament continues to play a key role in converting national priorities into actionable laws, policies and accountability systems through its legislative, oversight and representative functions.
It also referenced government initiatives in education, youth empowerment and social protection, alongside judicial reforms aimed at improving access to justice, as part of broader efforts to address these challenges.
Mr Bagbin therefore urged sustained collaboration and strong political commitment, warning that building a peaceful and just society requires consistent action to safeguard future generations.
