Ghana’s Black Meteors are set to begin their quest for a return to the Olympic Games after Egypt was confirmed as host of the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, the tournament that will determine Africa’s representatives at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has scheduled the tournament for November 2027, with eight countries expected to compete for the continental title.
Qualification for the tournament is expected to begin in September 2026, although CAF has yet to announce the qualifying fixtures.
For Ghana, the campaign carries added significance, as the Black Meteors have not qualified for the men’s Olympic football tournament since Athens 2004.
Under the new qualification format, Africa will have two slots at the 2028 Olympic football tournament, with the two finalists of the 2027 U-23 AFCON expected to secure qualification.
Coach Desmond Ofei is expected to lead Ghana’s preparations for the qualifiers, with the objective of ending a 24-year absence from Olympic football.
A successful qualification campaign would also revive memories of Ghana’s greatest Olympic football achievement, when the Black Meteors won the bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
