Ghana’s Black Queens made an impressive start to their 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a composed 2-0 victory over Cape Verde, taking an early lead in the race for qualification from Group C.
The Black Queens combined defensive discipline with attacking efficiency to secure all three points in their opening group match, limiting Cape Verde’s attacking threat while capitalising on key scoring opportunities.
Ghana struck early when Doris Boaduwaa found the back of the net in the seventh minute, giving the Black Queens the perfect start and allowing them to control the tempo of the match.
The early breakthrough boosted Ghana’s confidence, with the team enjoying long spells of possession and pressing aggressively to prevent Cape Verde from building sustained attacks.
The Black Queens doubled their advantage after the break when Eleia Vieira inadvertently turned the ball into her own net, giving Ghana a comfortable cushion.
Cape Verde attempted to mount a response in the second half, adopting a more attacking approach, but Ghana’s defence remained organised and resolute throughout the contest.
The victory gives the Black Queens a valuable three points and strengthens their position in Group C ahead of their remaining fixtures, while also providing an important confidence boost as they pursue a deep run in the tournament.
With a clean sheet and a convincing opening performance, Ghana has laid down an early marker in Morocco and will now look to build on the momentum in their next WAFCON outing.
