Football in the Bono Region is set for a major boost as four of its prominent clubs gear up for the maiden edition of the Bono Regional Minister’s Cup, an initiative designed to strengthen regional pride and promote grassroots sports development.
The tournament, scheduled for December 24, 2025, will feature a major derby between Premier League rivals Aduana FC and Berekum Chelsea FC. Sunyani’s division one sides—Boafokwa Tano FC and their fierce competitors BA United FC—will open the contest in what promises to be a highly engaging sporting festival. Aduana FC will host all matches at the Dormaa Sports Stadium.
Launching the competition in Sunyani, Bono Regional Minister Mr. Joseph Akwaboa said the tournament goes beyond football rivalry, representing a new chapter in the region’s quest to elevate sports and foster unity among communities. He announced that Aduana FC and Berekum Chelsea will each receive GH₵40,000 as appearance fees, with Boafokwa Tano and BA United set to receive GH₵20,000 each.
Organised by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council and the Bono Regional Football Association (BARFA), the competition will award trophies, medals, and cash prizes to winners.
Mr. Akwaboa emphasised that the Minister’s Cup is envisioned as an annual tradition that strengthens social bonds and nurtures young football talent in the region.
“Beyond competition, this cup symbolizes discipline, teamwork, and the values needed to build strong communities and a progressive region,” he said. “As we nurture football talent, we also nurture leadership, unity, and excellence.”
He commended GHALCA for its forward-thinking role in supporting domestic football and encouraged participating clubs to maintain professionalism and fair play, stressing that the tournament should be remembered for both exciting football and integrity.
GHALCA Chairman, Mr. John Kofi Ansah, applauded the Bono Region for initiating the regional football competition and pledged the Association’s full support, noting that Bono would be prioritized in future nationwide football development programmes.
With the launch of the Minister’s Cup, the Bono Region positions itself as a growing powerhouse of Ghanaian football—one that blends competition with community spirit and long-term player development.
