A growing operational setback at the Oti Landfill Site is threatening to trigger a sanitation crisis in parts of the Ashanti Region, as waste collectors struggle to dispose of refuse.
Tricycle operators, who play a key role in waste collection across the Kumasi metropolis, say persistent equipment failures at the landfill have brought operations to a near standstill. Long queues of refuse-laden tricycles have formed along access roads, with some operators waiting for hours to offload.
The landfill, a major disposal hub serving Kumasi and surrounding districts, has reportedly been unable to process waste efficiently due to frequent breakdowns of machinery used to level and manage refuse.
Collectors warn that the delays are not only affecting their daily operations but could also lead to a backlog of waste in communities if the situation persists.
They are now calling for urgent intervention from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to resolve the recurring problem and prevent a wider public health concern.
As of now, authorities have yet to respond publicly, leaving residents and sanitation workers increasingly anxious about the potential impact on environmental cleanliness and health.
