A fresh push is underway for the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to formally appoint celebrated traditional musician King Ayisoba as an ambassador for Ghana’s National Fugu Agenda.
Media personality MC Portfolio, speaking on Kumasi-based Angel FM in an interview monitored by MyNewsGh.com, argued that King Ayisoba’s consistent promotion of fugu — also known as batakari — makes him the most authentic face for the campaign.
According to him, the musician has worn the traditional fabric throughout his career, long before it gained renewed popularity in mainstream fashion. He described King Ayisoba as a cultural purist who has intentionally used his public image to project Ghanaian heritage.
“I have never even seen him in a suit or kaftan. He is always in fugu, sometimes even designed with the Ghana flag colours,” MC Portfolio remarked, emphasising the artiste’s unwavering identity branding.
He further noted that King Ayisoba organised events such as the Batakari Festival years before the recent surge in fugu’s popularity, positioning him as a pioneer rather than a follower of the trend.
MC Portfolio maintained that formally recognising the musician would go beyond symbolism. In his view, it would reinforce efforts to brand fugu as a national identity symbol while boosting tourism, culture and the creative arts sector.
The appeal adds to ongoing conversations about how Ghana can leverage indigenous fashion and cultural ambassadors to strengthen its global image and promote locally made products.
