Electricity supply in Cape Coast and surrounding communities will be temporarily interrupted on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as authorities carry out a major upgrade aimed at strengthening power delivery in the Central Region.
The planned shutdown, scheduled from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., will allow engineers to undertake critical works at the Cape Coast Substation, a key facility in the region’s power distribution network.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, working in collaboration with the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), said the exercise will involve replacing the existing 33MVA transformer with a more robust 66MVA transformer.
The Ministry’s Spokesperson and Head of Communications, Richmond Rockson, explained that the upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve system reliability and meet growing electricity demand in the area.
Once completed, the new transformer is expected to significantly enhance power distribution capacity and reduce the frequency of power outages that have affected households and businesses.
While acknowledging the inconvenience the prolonged outage may cause, authorities have appealed to residents and commercial operators for cooperation, assuring them that the temporary disruption is a necessary step toward achieving a more stable and efficient electricity supply in the long term.
