A fresh round of intra-party debate has emerged in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, a key member of Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 presidential campaign team, openly questioned Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent remarks about having “rich ideas” despite not being financially wealthy.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Dr. Opoku took aim at the Vice President’s assertion—made during a meeting with over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)—by arguing that ideas only carry weight when they result in tangible benefits for citizens.
“All rich ideas should point to jobs and wealth creation. Ideas that do not impact humanity are highly questionable,” Opoku stated, drawing a sharp contrast between intellectual rhetoric and real-world outcomes.
His critique appears to reflect growing tensions within the NPP as several factions begin posturing ahead of the 2028 flagbearership contest. While Dr. Bawumia has not officially declared his intentions to run again, his meetings with party officials and public statements signal a continued interest in leading the party.
Dr. Opoku, however, cautioned that visionary leadership requires more than eloquent speeches. “A rich man can lead just as a poor man can. However, ideas without financing are often useless on paper,” he added, suggesting that access to resources and execution capacity are equally crucial in politics.
The statement also subtly reinforces Bryan Acheampong’s positioning as a candidate with both vision and financial muscle—an implicit contrast with the Vice President’s own self-description.
As the NPP transitions from government into internal reorganization and future leadership planning, these early public exchanges signal a potentially heated contest ahead of 2028, with surrogates like Dr. Opoku already drawing clear lines between the competing camps.
