The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice concluded its External Court Session in Lagos on Friday, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand access to regional justice. The closing ceremony, held at the Lagos State Judiciary complex, was led by the President of the Court, Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves, alongside key judicial figures and civil society representatives.
The two-week programme, part of the Court’s 2025 Work Plan, included a Sensitization Outreach from May 5 to 7 and the main External Court Session from May 8 to 16. During this period, the Court heard 52 cases, delivered 13 judgments, issued 2 rulings, and significantly reduced its pending case load from 97 to 82, reflecting a strong commitment to timely justice delivery.
Bringing Justice Closer to the People
Justice Gonçalves emphasized the importance of the External Sessions in bridging the geographical gap between the Court’s Abuja headquarters and the wider ECOWAS region.
“These sessions are crucial for improving access to justice for citizens, particularly those who may not have the means to travel to Abuja,” he said, referencing Article 26(2) of the 1991 Protocol, which permits the Court to sit in other Member States as needed.
The President also highlighted the successful integration of digital tools, including the Electronic Case Management System and Virtual Court Sessions, which have streamlined case processing and enhanced transparency.
Collaboration and Gratitude
Special thanks were extended to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, and the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Hon. Justice Kazeem Olanrewaju Alogba, for their vital support in making the session possible.
Justice Gonçalves commended the Lagos State Judiciary for providing modern facilities and dedicated personnel, and praised the ECOWAS Court Judges for their hard work in reducing the backlog of cases, despite operating with a reduced bench.
“Your commitment has made this External Session a resounding success,” he said, before formally declaring the 2025 External Court Session in Lagos closed.
The event underscored the ECOWAS Court’s dedication to strengthening judicial collaboration across the region, enhancing transparency, and ensuring that justice remains accessible to all.
