Finance Ministry Clears Air on GES Salary Arrears, Says All 6,300 Workers Paid

The Ministry of Finance has dismissed claims of outstanding salary arrears involving 6,300 Ghana Education Service (GES) staff recruited in 2024, saying all workers covered under the arrangement have now received their payments.

The Ministry said the affected staff were recruited by the previous administration without the required financial clearance and were subsequently inherited by the current government in 2025.

According to the Ministry, the government took steps to regularise the recruitment and secure the necessary financial approval to facilitate the payment of the affected workers.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, the Ministry said Cabinet approval was obtained and financial clearance subsequently issued for the workers to be paid in four tranches.

“The Ministry of Finance can confirm that all 6,300 staff covered by this arrangement have been paid,” the statement said.

The Ministry’s clarification follows concerns raised by the Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted Staff of the GES over alleged delays in the payment of salaries and arrears.

However, the Finance Ministry maintained that there are no outstanding financial-clearance requests from the GES awaiting action.

“The Ministry further clarifies that there are no outstanding requests for financial clearance from the GES awaiting action by the Ministry of Finance,” it stated.

The Ministry explained that the recruitment issue stemmed from the engagement of the 6,300 GES staff in 2024 without the requisite financial clearance, creating an obligation that the current administration had to address after assuming office.

It said the subsequent approval and release of financial clearance enabled government to regularise the workers’ status and process their payments.

The Ministry has therefore urged any staff member who continues to experience difficulties with salary payments or arrears to engage the GES directly for resolution.

“Any staff member with an unresolved salary or arrears issue is advised to contact the Ghana Education Service for assistance with the relevant payroll or administrative matter,” it said.

The latest clarification effectively shifts attention from pending financial clearance to possible individual payroll or administrative challenges, with the Ministry insisting that its part of the payment process for the 6,300 workers has been completed.
