First National Bank Ghana Ltd. is set to strengthen its foothold in the country’s banking sector following a fresh capital injection of US$35 million by its shareholder, FirstRand Group.
This move, currently awaiting regulatory approval, highlights the group’s robust confidence in Ghana’s economy and the bank’s growth trajectory.
Coming on the heels of a strong first quarter in 2025, where First National Bank Ghana recorded a net profit before tax of GH¢30.68 million—more than double the previous year’s figure—the capital boost will further solidify the bank’s financial stability.
Its current capital base stands at GH¢548 million, comfortably above the Bank of Ghana’s regulatory minimum of GH¢400 million, supported by a healthy Capital Adequacy Ratio of 20.88%.
The infusion of new funds will enable the bank to expand its lending capacity, positioning it to meet the growing credit needs of Ghana’s private sector, which is critical for sustained economic development. FirstRand Group’s commitment signals an ambition to deepen the bank’s market relevance and accelerate its strategic goals focused on franchise growth and capital efficiency.
Warren Adams, CEO of First National Bank Ghana, emphasized the broader implications of the capital injection: “This demonstrates our unwavering faith in Ghana’s future and the strength of its regulatory environment. It enhances our ability to support businesses of all sizes and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic transformation.”
As the bank prepares to leverage this capital to enhance its product offerings and scale operations, industry watchers see this as a timely move that aligns with Ghana’s broader agenda for inclusive financial growth. The increased financial muscle is expected to help First National Bank Ghana play a more prominent role in fostering private sector development and innovation across the country.
