Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, Moses Foh-Amoaning, has called on African legislators to remain steadfast in defending what he described as the continent’s cultural and family values amid ongoing debates over LGBTQ rights.
Addressing participants at the 4th Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Mr. Foh-Amoaning argued that African countries should not feel compelled to adopt policies on LGBTQ issues based on interpretations of international human rights frameworks.
According to him, concerns that opposition to LGBTQ rights could place African nations at odds with international law are unfounded. He maintained that LGBTQ rights were not explicitly incorporated into international legal instruments and cautioned lawmakers against accepting claims to the contrary.
Mr. Foh-Amoaning told delegates that advocates of LGBTQ rights often frame their arguments around human rights, constitutional protections and sexual rights, but insisted that such interpretations should be critically examined by policymakers.
He urged parliamentarians to focus on safeguarding national sovereignty and protecting family values they believe reflect the aspirations of their citizens.
The conference, which brought together lawmakers, policymakers and advocacy groups from several countries, provided a platform for discussions on family policy, national sovereignty and social values across Africa.
Mr. Foh-Amoaning said the gathering offered an opportunity for legislators to exchange views and strengthen collaboration on issues affecting family structures and cultural identity on the continent.
The conference forms part of ongoing efforts by participating groups to engage policymakers on legislation and policies relating to family values and social development.
