The long-running anticipation for a blockbuster heavyweight clash between Britain’s top boxers remains unresolved after Anthony Joshua declined an immediate fight offer from rival Tyson Fury, even as both fighters publicly acknowledged that a showdown is still possible in the future.
The latest exchange unfolded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where Joshua watched ringside as Fury delivered a commanding victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov. After the bout, Fury used the spotlight to directly challenge Joshua to what he described as a “Battle of Britain,” calling on him to accept a fight for boxing fans.
“Do you accept my challenge?” Fury asked in the ring, signalling renewed urgency for the long-discussed matchup, which also drew attention from Saudi sports official Turki Alalshikh, a key figure in major boxing event negotiations.
Joshua, however, responded on his own terms, rejecting the idea that he would be pressured into a fixed timeline or externally dictated conditions. While affirming that a fight between the two remains part of his plans, he insisted he would decide when and how it happens.
The former heavyweight champion pointed to their amateur history and maintained confidence in his ability to prevail when the fight eventually materialises, but stressed that negotiations must respect his position.
The verbal standoff adds another layer to a rivalry that has stretched over a decade, repeatedly fuelled by public calls, stalled negotiations, and shifting boxing schedules. Attempts to stage the fight have previously collapsed due to competing obligations and contractual disputes, including complications linked to other heavyweight title arrangements.
Fury’s intermittent retirements and return announcements have also contributed to repeated delays, leaving the long-promised all-British heavyweight showdown still without a confirmed date.
For now, boxing fans remain in waiting mode as both fighters continue to trade words outside the ring while the question of when—or if—their rivalry will finally be settled remains open.
