The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GACC) has dismissed reports suggesting it approved the sale of livestock along the Kanda Highway and other major streets in Accra, insisting that no such authorisation has been granted.
In a statement issued on May 29, the Council clarified that neither the GACC nor the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, had permitted individuals or groups to engage in livestock trading on road medians, highways, or principal streets within the region.
It described the circulating reports as “inaccurate, misleading, and not reflective of the position of the Regional Coordinating Council,” following media publications that suggested official approval of the practice.
The Council explained that rather than endorsing such activities, it has been actively working to stop them after observing the increasing presence of livestock sellers along the Kanda Highway and other busy roads.
According to the statement, a stakeholder meeting was convened involving the Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, livestock traders, and other relevant actors to address the situation.
At the meeting, officials raised concerns about the safety risks posed by the roadside activities, including threats to motorists, pedestrians, and the animals themselves, as well as disruptions to traffic flow and the improper use of public spaces.
Following the engagement, operators were directed to vacate the roadside locations and relocate their businesses to approved and more appropriate areas.
The Council expressed surprise at reports suggesting it had sanctioned the very activities it was working to eliminate, stressing that such claims misrepresent its actions and ongoing enforcement efforts.
It has therefore called on media houses that published the information to issue corrections to prevent public misunderstanding.
The GACC also urged the public to disregard the claims, reiterating that no approval has been given for livestock sales on highways, medians, or major streets in the Greater Accra Region.
Reaffirming its position, the Council emphasized its commitment to maintaining public safety, improving sanitation, and ensuring orderly use of public spaces across the capital.
