The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation have agreed to retain Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, with the Portuguese tactician expected to sign a new two-year contract following Ghana’s FIFA World Cup campaign.
According to sources close to the GFA, the decision was reached after consultations between the football governing body and the Sports Ministry, with both parties expressing confidence in Queiroz’s ability to lead the senior national team into its next phase.
The experienced coach, who was initially appointed on a four-month contract ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is now set to remain in charge through to 2028.
His primary assignment under the new deal will be to guide Ghana to success at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Black Stars will be seeking to end a 45-year wait for the continental title.
Ghana last lifted the AFCON trophy in 1982, and restoring the country’s status as African champions is expected to be the central objective of Queiroz’s tenure.
Queiroz earned the confidence of the football authorities after leading the Black Stars through the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Ghana progressed to the knockout stage before exiting the tournament in the Round of 32.
The extension reflects the GFA’s belief that continuity and stability on the technical bench will be crucial as the Black Stars begin preparations for the 2027 AFCON and other upcoming international competitions.
An official announcement confirming Queiroz’s new contract is expected once the agreement has been finalised.
