The Government of Ghana has called for a swift investigation and the prosecution of those responsible for the killing of a Ghanaian national during anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the government expressed deep sorrow over the death of 40-year-old Bashiru Isak, who was reportedly shot and killed in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on Monday, June 30, amid demonstrations linked to xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals.
Describing the incident as a senseless act of violence, the government strongly condemned the growing wave of xenophobia targeting African migrants, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.
According to the ministry, the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has formally protested the incident to South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation and has also lodged an official complaint with the South African Police Service after confirming the victim’s identity and informing his family.
The government is demanding a comprehensive, transparent and expedited investigation into the killing, insisting that the perpetrators be identified, arrested and prosecuted without delay.
It further appealed to South African authorities to strengthen security for Ghanaians and other foreign nationals living in communities affected by the anti-immigrant unrest.
The Ministry reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad and urged the South African government to take decisive action to curb xenophobic violence and guarantee the safety of all residents, regardless of nationality.
