Ghana Eyes Pharmaceutical Leadership in West Africa as GAVI Partnership Strengthens Health Sector

The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to fortifying the health sector, setting ambitious goals to become a leading pharmaceutical hub in West Africa. This strategic move aims to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and secure the country’s health systems ahead of its planned transition from GAVI support by 2030.

Deputy Minister for Finance, Mr. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, highlighted this vision during a recent meeting with Dr. Sania Nishtar, the Chief Executive Officer of the Global Alliance for Vaccine Initiatives (GAVI), at the Ministry of Finance. He emphasized that the government’s ongoing financial support for the health sector is a critical part of this plan, including the recent uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which unlocked GHS30 billion to strengthen healthcare delivery.

“The government’s commitment to the health sector remains unwavering. We aim to transform Ghana into a pharmaceutical hub within the sub-region, leveraging our partnership with GAVI to create jobs and add value to local resources,” Mr. Ampem Nyarko stated.

Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, praised GAVI for its pivotal role in enhancing Ghana’s immunization program, noting that the country currently leads the sub-region in vaccination coverage – a key metric for public health resilience.

Dr. Nishtar commended Ghana’s progress, describing the vaccination program as a strong, trust-based system that has significantly boosted access to immunization, particularly among women. She also pledged GAVI’s continued support to ensure a seamless transition as Ghana moves towards greater self-reliance in healthcare.

With this renewed commitment, Ghana is positioning itself not just as a healthcare leader, but as a crucial player in the regional pharmaceutical market, reflecting a broader economic strategy aimed at sustainable growth and resilience.
