The Ghanaian boxing fraternity has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Ernest “Bahubali” Akushey, a promising super middleweight fighter who passed away at just 27 years old.
Akushey, who trained out of James Town’s famed Wadada Gym, was widely celebrated for his fearless ring style and charisma that earned him the nickname “Bahubali,” after the legendary warrior character in the Indian blockbuster film. His relentless approach and entertaining performances quickly made him a fan favourite on the local circuit.
The young boxer’s career once looked unstoppable, as he surged to a 6-0-0 record early on. Though recent years brought setbacks, his supporters continued to believe in his potential to rise again. His last fight at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12, 2025, against Jacob Dickson, ended in an eighth-round technical knockout, a result that has since drawn scrutiny after reports emerged of his sudden illness days later.
According to sources close to his family, Akushey fell ill on Monday, September 22, and passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, September 23. While suspicions point to internal injuries sustained during his final fight, an official autopsy report is still awaited.
Tributes have begun pouring in from across Ghana’s boxing community, with many remembering him not only as a fierce competitor but also as a humble son of James Town whose career inspired young fighters in the area.
His passing serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with the sport, even as Ghana continues to produce fighters who shine on the international stage. For many, Akushey’s legacy will live on as a testament to the spirit and resilience of Bukom boxing.
