Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing future sports champions with the departure of a 70-member contingent of young athletes and officials to Angola for the 2025 African Youth Games.
The delegation, drawn from 15 sporting disciplines, represents one of Ghana’s most diverse youth squads in recent years. For many of the athletes, aged between 14 and 17, the Games offer a first major international experience—an opportunity the state considers essential to long-term sports development.
President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Mr. Richard Akpokavie, said the team’s participation reflects deliberate investment in youth sports pathways.
“This trip is a product of close cooperation between the Sports Ministry and the GOC. We are committed to exposing our young talents to the global stage early, because this is how future Olympians are made,” he said.
The GOC expressed appreciation to the Minister of Sports and Recreation and the Government of Ghana, noting that the support extended to the contingent demonstrates the country’s resolve to develop well-rounded athletes capable of competing globally.
Chef de Mission Kamal Sulley will lead the squad, which includes competitors in judo, basketball, cycling, tennis, weightlifting and other events. Officials believe the exposure in Luanda—host city for the December 10–20 Games—will contribute significantly to athlete development ahead of future continental and world competitions.
Organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the African Youth Games serve as the continent’s premier platform for identifying and grooming the next generation of elite athletes. Ghanaian officials say participating is not just about medals, but about building the experience, confidence and discipline required for long-term sporting success.
