Ghana is gearing up to host the inaugural Independence Armwrestling Championship, a four-nation showdown set for Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Centre Point Mall in Accra. The championship will be the Ghana Armwrestling Federation’s (GAF) first major event following its historic performance at the 13th African Games, where Team Ghana secured 41 medals.
The highly anticipated event will see armwrestlers from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and Ghana competing for supremacy in various weight categories. Ghana’s team, led by world champion Grace Minta, has been in intensive training and is determined to continue their dominance in the sport.
Adding prestige to the occasion, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Adams, and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Ms. Linda Ocloo, will be special guests at the championship.
Speaking ahead of the event, GAF President, Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, highlighted the growing popularity of armwrestling in Ghana, crediting the country’s recent success for increasing interest in the sport.
“Armwrestling is now a household sport in Ghana. Our historic performance at the African Games has brought massive support, and we want to celebrate this milestone with fans through the Independence Championship,” he stated.
He further encouraged Ghanaians to come out in numbers to cheer the Golden Arms, Ghana’s national armwrestling team, as they seek yet another triumph on home soil.
