Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, has received an enthusiastic show of support from across the country with the launch of a new fundraising campaign, which raised $10 million on its very first day.
The high-profile launch brought together political leaders, sports figures, and entertainment icons, highlighting the campaign’s national significance. Among the attendees were President John Dramani Mahama, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku.
Deputy Finance Minister and Fundraising Committee Chair, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, described the initial response as a “strong signal of national pride,” noting that the early contributions put the campaign well on track to reach its $30 million goal. The funds will support the team’s preparations for international competitions, including four upcoming friendly matches.
A standout feature of the initiative is its inclusivity: ordinary Ghanaians have a chance to directly participate in supporting the Black Stars. By using the short code *899#, citizens can not only contribute but may also be selected to travel and cheer for the team at the World Cup.
The campaign also celebrated Ghanaian culture and talent, with appearances from football legends such as former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah and ex-internationals Fatawu Dauda and Mohammed Polo. Music stars Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, and Nacee added a vibrant cultural flavor to the event, making it a celebration of both sport and national identity.
Organizers have pledged to roll out additional events in the coming weeks to continue momentum toward the $30 million target, aiming to unify Ghanaians in support of their team while promoting national pride.
