The Ghanaian banking sector is steadily regaining stability after enduring significant economic turbulence, according to Kwamina Asomaning, President of the Ghana Association of Banks.
He was speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on March 20. Asomaning noted that while challenges remain, the sector has made notable strides toward recovery.
Ghana’s banking industry has faced multiple shocks in recent years, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the sovereign debt crisis, which led to a debt restructuring process that severely impacted financial institutions holding government bonds.
Despite these setbacks, Asomaning, who is also the Managing Director of Stanbic Bank Ghana, expressed confidence in the sector’s resilience.
“I wouldn’t say one period has been significantly more turbulent than others, but we’ve gone through a few shocks,” he remarked. “That said, the situation has improved compared to 2022 and 2023.”
The debt restructuring efforts led to liquidity challenges and a decline in investor confidence, forcing banks to adapt to a rapidly changing economic environment.
However, coordinated efforts between banks and regulators, particularly the Bank of Ghana, have helped restore stability.
“The regulator has played a key role in ensuring that the right policies and measures are in place to boost confidence in the sector,” Asomaning stated.
Positive macroeconomic trends, including lower inflation, currency stability, and improved growth projections, signal a cautious optimism for the industry.
While Asomaning acknowledged that uncertainties still exist, he emphasized the need for banks to remain agile and innovative to sustain recent gains.
“As banks, we must continue to adapt and evolve. The challenges we’ve faced only highlight the importance of resilience in this industry,” he concluded.
With the sector showing signs of stabilization, industry players are looking ahead, focused on strengthening financial systems, rebuilding investor confidence, and supporting economic growth in Ghana.
