Dr. Kofi Amoa-Abban, CEO of Rigworld Solutions, has attributed Ghana’s ongoing energy crisis largely to ineffective leadership and excessive politicization within the sector. Speaking at the 2025 practitioners’ forum hosted by UPSA, he highlighted how poor management has exacerbated inefficiencies, including the mysterious disappearance of critical equipment meant for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Pointing to the sector’s ballooning debt of an estimated US$3 billion, Dr. Amoa-Abban emphasized that Ghana possesses sufficient offshore gas reserves but lacks competent leadership to harness these resources productively. He urged the appointment of knowledgeable professionals who can implement creative solutions to transform the industry.
On energy transition, he advised caution against hastily abandoning fossil fuels, noting that Africa, unlike Western countries, is still developing its hydrocarbon resources and must balance green energy adoption with sustainable economic growth.
Dr. Amoa-Abban’s insights call for strategic leadership reforms as a prerequisite for stabilizing Ghana’s energy sector and positioning the country for future development.
