Ghana’s public debt burden recorded a significant decline in February 2026, with new figures from the Bank of Ghana showing a reduction of nearly GH¢100 billion compared to the same period last year.
According to the Bank’s latest Summary of Economic and Financial Data released in May 2026, total public debt fell to approximately GH¢674.1 billion in February 2026 from about GH¢771.5 billion recorded in February 2025.
The data also showed improvement in the country’s debt sustainability indicators, with public debt as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) declining to around 42.2 per cent, down from levels exceeding 50 per cent a year earlier.
Despite the improvement in cedi terms, Ghana’s total public debt remained above $60 billion when measured in dollar terms, reflecting the continued weight of both domestic and external obligations.
The report indicated that domestic debt stood at more than GH¢360 billion in early 2026, while external debt remained above $29 billion during the review period.
The latest figures suggest a gradual easing of Ghana’s debt pressures amid ongoing fiscal adjustment and economic recovery efforts aimed at stabilising the country’s public finances.
