The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has strongly condemned violent incidents at the Northern Regional Hospital in Tamale, warning that attacks on health facilities put lives at risk and disrupt essential medical services.
The condemnation follows a viral video showing a group of youths besieging the hospital, locking the Medical Director’s office, and barricading the Outpatients Department.
In a statement, the GMA described the actions as reckless and unlawful, emphasizing that such behavior threatens both patients and staff while undermining hospital operations. The Association expressed concern over a rising trend of youth groups taking grievances into their own hands rather than following proper procedures.
Dr. (Dent) Richard Selormey, GMA General Secretary, urged the police to swiftly hold those responsible accountable. He also called on traditional leaders to appeal to the youth to resolve disputes through legitimate channels and encouraged the Ghana Health Service to ensure the protection of hospital staff during the resolution process.
The GMA said it is closely monitoring the situation and warned that further action would be taken if threats to health workers continue.
