The Goaso Municipal Hospital is grappling with a worsening mortuary crisis as obsolete refrigerators threaten proper body preservation, according to Dr. James Ankomah, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional capital, Dr. Ankomah made an urgent appeal for immediate intervention, revealing that the hospital’s aging mortuary refrigerators are malfunctioning frequently and draining hospital resources through constant repair work.
“Our refrigerators are too old to effectively preserve bodies. Repairs are frequent and costly — sometimes reaching as high as GHC30,000 — yet they offer no lasting solution,” Dr. Ankomah lamented.
Beyond the outdated refrigerators, he disclosed that the entire mortuary facility is itself in dire condition and requires complete replacement to meet modern standards.
He stressed that without swift support, the hospital could face severe challenges in delivering dignified services to families of the deceased, highlighting the broader implications for public health and community trust.
As the situation grows increasingly untenable, Dr. Ankomah’s call underscores a critical need for investment to ensure humane and professional body preservation at one of the region’s key health institutions.
