The government has commenced construction of a 400-bed Mother and Child Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, in a move aimed at expanding the country’s capacity to provide specialised maternal and paediatric healthcare.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh said the project had moved into the construction phase after government completed the contracting process and the selected contractor mobilised to site.
He disclosed this during the Ministry of Health’s Health Sector Update Engagement in Accra.
According to the Minister, the new facility will provide dedicated infrastructure for mothers, newborns and children and include specialised facilities such as theatres.
“We have signed a contract, and the contractor has moved to site and commenced the construction of a 400-bed capacity mother and child centre at Korle Bu. It contains a lot of facilities, including theatres, and somebody will say it is a hospital within a hospital, a magnificent one of course,” Mr Akandoh said.
The centre is expected to strengthen Korle Bu’s capacity to manage complex maternal and child health cases referred from health facilities across the country.
As Ghana’s leading tertiary healthcare facility, Korle Bu receives patients requiring specialised treatment from different parts of the country, placing significant demand on its existing infrastructure.
The new centre is therefore expected to provide additional space and specialised facilities for maternal and paediatric services while complementing the hospital’s existing operations.
Three regional hospitals also underway
Mr Akandoh also announced that government had commenced work on three new regional hospitals in the Oti, Western North and Savannah Regions.
The projects form part of broader efforts by the government to expand healthcare infrastructure beyond the major referral centres and improve access to specialised medical services across the country.
The Minister said the investments were intended to strengthen healthcare delivery by increasing infrastructure and service capacity at both regional and national levels.
