The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has urged closer collaboration between health professionals and the media to improve public understanding of healthcare issues and promote healthier communities.
The call was made by the Acting Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Robert Amesiya, during a media engagement organised by Jhpiego Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service.
The training programme brought together journalists to build their capacity in responsible health reporting and effective public health communication.
Dr. Amesiya stressed that improving health outcomes requires more than expanding access to medical facilities, noting that public education plays a critical role in shaping healthy behaviours.
He explained that communities must be well-informed about disease prevention, healthy practices, and available healthcare services in order to make informed decisions about their wellbeing.
According to him, misinformation and gaps in public health communication can undermine efforts to improve national health indicators, making the role of the media essential in bridging that gap.
The engagement forms part of broader initiatives aimed at strengthening accurate health reporting and encouraging the media to support national efforts in promoting preventive healthcare and positive lifestyle choices.
