Ghana’s young athletes have departed Accra with heightened expectations as they head to Angola for the 2025 African Youth Games, where the nation will compete for medals across 15 demanding disciplines. The 70-member contingent—comprising athletes and coaches—will carry the country’s ambitions from December 10 to 20 as they battle some of the continent’s most promising talents.
The multi-sport event is expected to push Ghana’s youth stars to their limits, with participation in diverse fields such as Athletics, Badminton, Fencing, Boxing, Swimming, Karate, Weightlifting and more. Officials say the experience will be a defining moment for many competitors seeking to break onto the elite sporting stage.
Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Mr. Richard Akpokavie, said the trip is more than just participation—it is an opportunity for Ghana to demonstrate the strength of its rising sporting generation.
“We want our young athletes to seize this stage and prove that Ghana can contend with the best,” he noted. “The support they are receiving is meant to empower them to chase excellence and return home with growth, experience and, hopefully, medals.”
He expressed gratitude to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, and the Government for providing the crucial backing needed for Ghana’s full representation at the Games.
With the African Youth Games serving as a gateway to bigger international competitions—including future Youth Olympic Games—sports officials believe the Angola tournament could mark the beginning of several promising careers. They are calling on Ghanaians to rally behind the team as the young athletes step onto one of the continent’s biggest youth sporting stages.
Organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Games have become a proving ground for Africa’s next generation of champions, and Ghana’s contingent is determined to seize the moment.
