Industry Insider Warns of Lost IP Opportunity as Afro‑Dancehall Credit Dispute Heats Up

Amid a brewing dispute between Stonebwoy and Samini over who owns the Afro‑Dancehall title, former manager Karl Kporgla Gidiglo highlights a crucial lesson in music IP: the missed chance to trademark the genre name.

Karl, who guided Stonebwoy’s early fusion of African rhythms with Dancehall back in 2012, insists his former client was the first to coin “Afro‑Dancehall.” Yet, he laments, “We never secured legal rights when the term first emerged—an oversight that has now muddied the waters of credit.”

As Samini publicly stakes his claim on the movement’s origins, industry observers say the controversy underscores the importance of protecting creative innovations. “Registering the genre could have avoided today’s scramble over recognition,” Karl told Graphic Showbiz.

The debate continues to ripple through Ghana’s music scene, but one takeaway is clear: in a fast‑evolving industry, pioneering sounds—and their names—deserve formal safeguards to preserve both legacy and legal rights.
