Japan became the first team to book their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, sealing qualification in dominant fashion with a 2-0 victory over Bahrain at Saitama Stadium on Thursday.
After a goalless first half, Crystal Palace midfielder Daichi Kamada made an instant impact off the bench, breaking the deadlock in the 66th minute. Takefusa Kubo then wrapped up the win with a late strike, securing Japan’s eighth consecutive World Cup appearance.
The victory ensures that Hajime Moriyasu’s side will finish in the top two of Group C in the AFC qualifiers, guaranteeing their spot at next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Japan continues to lead Group C with a commanding nine-point advantage over second-placed Australia, who also enjoyed a strong showing on the same night. The Socceroos overcame an early penalty scare before dismantling Indonesia 5-1 in Sydney, in what was Patrick Kluivert’s first game as head coach of the visitors.
Despite Kevin Diks hitting the post from the spot in the eighth minute, Australia capitalized on the missed opportunity. Martin Boyle opened the scoring from a penalty, before Jackson Irvine’s brace, alongside goals from Nishan Velupillay and Lewis Miller, ensured a comfortable win for the Socceroos.
Under the current AFC qualification format, the top two teams from each of the three groups automatically qualify for the World Cup, while the third- and fourth-placed teams advance to a playoff round for another chance at qualification.
With their early qualification sealed, Japan now shifts focus to maintaining momentum ahead of the World Cup, while Australia strengthens its bid to join them on the global stage.
