Ghana captain Jordan Ayew has taken his first step towards making his mark at Sheffield United after being named among the substitutes for their Championship clash with Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday night.
The 34-year-old was included in manager Chris Wilder’s matchday squad just hours after completing his move to the Blades on a one-year contract as a free agent.
Ayew, who joined Sheffield United following his departure from Leicester City at the end of last season, watched from the bench as his new side secured a crucial 2-1 comeback victory at Ewood Park.
His inclusion alongside experienced players such as Patrick Bamford and Jaïro Riedewald suggested that Wilder was prepared to involve the Ghanaian immediately, despite his recent arrival at the club.
However, Ayew was not called upon during the encounter and will now have to wait for his first competitive appearance in Sheffield United colours.
The Blades initially fell behind when Kristi Montgomery put Blackburn ahead, but Tom Cannon restored parity before Sydie Peck completed the comeback before the break.
The victory handed Sheffield United their first away win of the Championship campaign and provided Wilder’s side with a positive result ahead of Ayew’s anticipated debut.
Ayew brings considerable experience to the Sheffield United squad, having spent his career with clubs including Marseille, Sochaux, Lorient, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.
His arrival is expected to add experience and attacking options to Wilder’s squad as Sheffield United pursue their Championship ambitions.
The Ghana international also enters his latest club assignment after captaining the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, further underlining the leadership and international experience he brings to the team.
With his first appearance now the immediate target, Ayew will be hoping to make his Sheffield United debut in the club’s next fixture and begin the latest chapter of his long professional career.
