Residents of the Kassena-Nankana West District are set to benefit from expanded access to basic medical services following its selection under the government’s Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) programme.
The district is among 150 nationwide earmarked for the initiative, which was launched in April 2026 by President John Dramani Mahama as part of efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
District Chief Executive Stephen Aeke Akurugo announced the development during the first ordinary meeting of the District Assembly, describing it as a major boost for healthcare delivery in the area.
He explained that the programme will provide free essential health services at primary healthcare facilities, while also strengthening preventive care through community-based interventions such as public education campaigns, deployment of health volunteers and home visits.
As part of efforts to improve access in remote communities, he noted that tricycles will be provided to support healthcare workers in reaching hard-to-access areas, helping to overcome long-standing transportation challenges.
Mr. Akurugo added that the initiative is expected to enhance efficiency in health service delivery and reduce pressure on households seeking basic medical care.
He also revealed that the district’s Agenda 111 hospital project has been identified among 35 facilities nationwide prioritised for completion in the first phase of the government’s infrastructure plan. The project is currently about 70 per cent complete and is expected to significantly improve healthcare access upon completion.
In addition, the District Health Directorate has completed and handed over a children’s ward at the Kassena-Nankana East Health Centre, funded through Internally Generated Funds (IGF), aimed at improving pediatric care and easing congestion at existing facilities.
However, Mr. Akurugo noted that an office accommodation project initiated by the Directorate using the same funding source remains stalled at the foundation stage due to limited funds.
Health officials say the combined interventions are expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in the district and improve overall access to quality medical services for residents.
