The Ghana Mountain and Trail Federation (GMTF), under the auspices of Ghana Athletics, has officially sanctioned the 21-kilometre route for the highly anticipated 2025 Kwahu Mountain Marathon — setting the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive and scenic races in West Africa this year.
Slated for Saturday, April 19, the marathon is expected to be the crown jewel of the Easter festivities in the Kwahu highlands, with over 500 long-distance runners from Ghana and across the West African sub-region confirming their participation. Registration officially closes on Thursday, April 17.
On Tuesday, a delegation from the GMTF, led by Warrant Officer Clement Smith Danyagri and Flight Sergeant James Koko Normenyo (Vice President and Treasurer of the Federation), completed a technical inspection of the route. The team, joined by Coach Bright Attah, technical director of the marathon, verified the race path starting from Nkawkaw Goil Fuel Station, winding through Obomeng, Mpraeso, and culminating at the Kwahu Traditional Council Office in Bepong.
Their verdict? The course meets international trail-running standards and is ready for action.
Ahead of the main event, organizers have scheduled a familiarisation tour of the course on Friday, April 18, to help athletes acclimate to the hilly terrain. A technical briefing with coaches will also be held to ensure safety and optimal performance during the race.
Coach Attah expressed confidence in the route and the level of preparedness:
“This year’s race will be tougher and more rewarding. The improvements made are geared toward enhancing the overall experience for both athletes and fans.”
This year’s marathon promises not only a thrilling competition but also generous rewards. The top 20 finishers in both the men’s and women’s categories will receive cash prizes and medals, recognizing their grit and endurance in conquering the Kwahu mountains.
Now a staple on Ghana’s athletics calendar, the Kwahu Mountain Marathon continues to grow in stature, blending sport, tourism, and culture into one high-impact event.
With heightened anticipation and meticulous preparation, the 2025 edition is poised to be a defining moment in Ghana’s long-distance running history.
