Calm has been restored in the Kyeremasu Township in the Dormaa Municipality of the Bono Region after a tense protest by some youth following the death of a young man allegedly linked to an illegal mining site.
The Assembly Member for the Atanofie Electoral Area, Khadija Adjei, has called for restraint and urged security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident, which has heightened tensions in the area.
According to her, the situation reflects growing concern over the involvement of some young people in illegal mining activities despite repeated warnings and efforts to discourage galamsey operations.
She described it as worrying that many of the youth remain engaged in such activities, even in the face of calls to seek alternative livelihoods.
The unrest followed a demonstration on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, by aggrieved youth who took to the streets to protest the killing of a young man at a mining site in Akontanim in the Dormaa East District. The deceased was reportedly shot by unknown persons on Monday, April 13, 2026.
Madam Adjei described the incident as unfortunate and appealed for swift police action to identify and arrest those responsible. She also noted that it was not yet clear whether any anti-illegal mining taskforce linked to the Dormaa Traditional Council was involved in the incident.
The protest briefly disrupted movement within the area as demonstrators blocked major roads and caused disruptions that left commuters stranded on routes linking Kyeremasu, Dormaa Ahenkro, Wamfie, Amasu, and Akontanim.
Security personnel, including police and military teams, were deployed to restore order. Their intervention successfully brought the situation under control and prevented further escalation.
Authorities say normalcy has since returned to the town, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
