Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has backed Ghana international Brandon Thomas-Asante to prove his worth in the Premier League, describing the forward as a model of perseverance for players seeking to rise through the lower divisions of English football.
Lampard said the 26-year-old’s determination, work ethic and willingness to improve had convinced him that he possessed the qualities needed to compete at the highest level following Coventry’s promotion to the English top flight.
Thomas-Asante has earned an important place in Lampard’s squad through his versatility and commitment, with the manager highlighting his ability to contribute in several attacking positions.
The Ghanaian’s journey to the Premier League has been far from straightforward, having started his senior career with non-league clubs Ebbsfleet United and Sutton United before progressing to Salford City in League Two.
His performances at Salford earned him a move to Championship side West Bromwich Albion, where he continued his development before joining Coventry City and completing his rise to English football’s top division.
Speaking about the forward’s suitability for the Premier League, Lampard said his assessment was based not only on his footballing ability but also on the mentality he demonstrated in training.
“Yeah, I think he does,” Lampard said when asked whether Thomas-Asante looked like a Premier League player.
“From knowing him now, from working close up with him, a huge part of that is his mentality towards it. He’s fought his way up the leagues.
“He trains at such a level every day to try and maximise himself. He engages with you, and he’s got this real hunger to show that he believes he deserves to be here.”
Lampard highlights Thomas-Asante’s qualities
The former Chelsea and England midfielder said Thomas-Asante possessed several attributes that could help Coventry compete against established Premier League sides.
He pointed to the striker’s physical strength, technical ability, anticipation and effectiveness in holding up the ball as qualities that make him a valuable option in attack.
Lampard explained that Coventry needed players capable of meeting the physical demands of the Premier League while contributing to the team’s attacking play.
“And he’s got talent, and when you get promoted, and you go, ‘What do we need in this squad?’ Yeah, we need to bring in physicality and anticipation and good qualities, hold-up play,” he said.
“Brandon’s got them, and I’m a big supporter of his and a believer in him. When I came up, I was like, he’s absolutely for me at this football club, to be able to offer so much.”
The manager’s comments underline his confidence in the Ghanaian as Coventry seek to establish themselves among the country’s top-flight clubs.
Versatility gives Ghanaian forward an advantage
Thomas-Asante’s ability to operate across the frontline has further strengthened his position in Lampard’s plans.
The forward can play as a central striker, on either wing or in the attacking midfield role, offering the manager flexibility when selecting his team and adjusting his attacking approach.
Lampard praised his willingness to undertake different responsibilities and his commitment to giving his best regardless of the position assigned to him.
“He can play left wing, play as a 10, play right wing, play as a number nine; he can do anything and will give you everything,” the Coventry manager said.
He added that the Ghanaian represented the kind of player who could progress through the football pyramid through humility, hard work and a determination to improve.
“So yeah, I think he’s a good example of players that come through with a really humble mentality that want to do well. Brandon is that,” Lampard said.
Tottenham clash next for Coventry
Thomas-Asante will be hoping to maintain his momentum when Coventry face Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.
The fixture presents another opportunity for the Ghana international to demonstrate his ability against top-level opposition as he seeks to retain his place in Lampard’s plans.
With the manager publicly expressing confidence in his qualities, Thomas-Asante will be keen to translate that backing into consistent performances and help Coventry navigate the challenges of Premier League football.
His rise from non-league football to the English top flight also offers an example of the determination and sustained development required to reach the highest level of the game.
