A former Fifa referee Jonas Eriksson accusing FIFA President Gianni Infantino of shattering the game’s integrity by bending to political interference from U.S. President Donald Trump.
The extraordinary outburst follows escalating global controversy surrounding the disparate disciplinary treatment of players at the FIFA World Cup, highlighted by the mysterious lifting of a tournament suspension for U.S. striker Folarin Balogun following direct pressure from the White House.
‘A Complete Circus’
“We are witnessing FIFA, under Gianni Infantino, rewrite the laws of the game to cater to the demands of U.S. President Donald Trump,” Eriksson stated. “By allowing political interference into football disciplinary matters, the federation is failing its duty to the sport, effectively releasing FIFA’s hidden lines of backroom political compromise. As a result, fans are losing faith, and the very credibility of football is under siege.”
The highly decorated Swedish official, who controlled high-stakes fixtures on the world stage for nearly two decades, admitted he was completely blindsided by the unprecedented political intrusion into standard tournament regulations.
“When I first watched Donald Trump’s press conference evaluating the referee’s performance, the red card, and the suspension, I honestly thought it was an AI-generated hoax. It took me ten minutes to realize it was real. The circus that followed is still going on, and everyone who loves and follows this game with passion is losing out.”
Integrity Under Fire
The controversy has ignited a fierce debate regarding consistency at the highest level of the sport. While the United States’ Balogun saw his red card ban dramatically frozen, other nations—including England, who lost defender Jarell Quansah to an identical disciplinary track—have faced the full weight of the rulebook without executive intervention.
For Eriksson, the failure to protect the independence of the game’s judiciary strikes at the very heart of the sport. “What everyone wants from referees, they want the correct decisions, yes, but more important always is consistency. Player A gets the same sanction as player B. Team A gets the same sanction as team B. That is what you expect. And this is completely not the case.”
FIFA has maintained that its conversations with the U.S. executive played no role in the final ruling, but the governing body’s refusal to transparently explain the sudden legal gymnastics has left the global game demanding answers.
